Ancelotti's son David Ancelotti was interviewed by the media and talked about the idea of helping his father coach the Brazilian team and coach alone in the future.
Q: What do you think about coaching alone?
A: My goal is to be able to coach alone one day. This is one of my career goals. At the end of the season, my dad gave me a chance to stay with the Brazilian national team as his assistant. I asked for some time to think about it and talked to some clubs. Ultimately, given the details of the negotiation, the best option for me is to take this challenge, compete in the World Cup, and play on behalf of 200 million people. So after careful consideration, I think going to the World Cup is the best decision now.
Q: So until July 2026, will you temporarily put aside the idea of coaching alone?
A: At present, I am not considering the matter in July 2026, I focus on my work every day. We evaluate and discuss when new opportunities arise. I can't predict what I'll do in a year, but I'm really excited about the Brazilian national team and being a part of the Brazilian Football Association. It is also an opportunity to learn a new language, learn about new leagues, and get in touch with high-level players and professionals.
Q: Do you think coaching the Brazilian national team is a precious gift? You may become world champions in a year.
A: My father is from Reggiolo, a small town with only 5,000 people. It almost seemed impossible to think of someone born there being able to coach the Brazilian national team. Dreams are not impossible to achieve. Winning the World Cup is possible because that is the goal of Brazil. We come from an environment that is used to victory, and we are expected to win here. This kind of stress is no stranger to us, on the contrary, it is very exciting and the motivation we need.
Q: If Brazil wins the World Cup...who dares to say that Carlo Ancelotti is not the greatest coach in history? If he wins the World Cup and has the most Champions League titles
A: To me, of course, there is no doubt that he is the greatest coach. But this is a debate that I am not objective. Even if he didn't win the World Cup, I would consider him the greatest coach in history.
Q: What kind of coach will he become when you no longer work with your father?
A: My father taught me to be flexible, adapt to different situations, and have multiple ways to win. What matters is that the team is able to handle different stages of the game. Despite this, everyone has their own preferences and I like a more direct and bold football style.
But if I want to summarize my football philosophy, I think the most important thing is to be able to do a lot at a high level. The team in its best shape is Paris Saint-Germain, who can control the ball, attack quickly, press high positions and defend in the penalty area. Their performance against Liverpool showed their multi-faceted skills. Modern football requires a variety of skills, and my priority is to enable my players to fully master these skills and best use them according to their characteristics.
Q: Are your opinions with your father more consistent or inconsistent?
Answer: It is completely inconsistent. In fact, we have more when we disagree. I think as an assistant coach, this is my duty and what he needs. It can be said that this is not only a characteristic of me, but also of all his assistants, because he is an experienced coach with a lot of certainty and requires a challenging environment. Maybe as a 35-year-old young coach, I have more questions and need more advice and support. And he needs people who don't always agree with him. Of course, it is all based on respect and the final decision is always in his hands.
Q: What did you bring to your father?
Answer: I think it is a focus on details. Ten years ago, some aspects could be ignored, but now if you want to win, you cannot ignore any details. To compete, everything must be covered, because everything in modern football is carefully prepared. So my colleagues, like Francesco and Simon, have been committed to paying attention to every detail and forming a style in the game preparation.
Q: If you coach alone, would you take your father’s entire coaching team?
A: No, I will not take my father’s coaching team away. I also have some contacts and professionals to work with. I already have some ideas about my coaching team, although it is compatible while working in the national team. But I will not take all my father's assistants away.
Q: From the first stage to the second stage, the coaching team became younger...
A: Yes, over time, he gradually changed the team, but that doesn't mean the team was bad before, because his career has been very successful and everyone helped him win.
Q: Are you dissatisfied with the statement that Real Madrid is getting better under Alonso's leadership and players are running more?
Answer: No, I don't mind. This is something new and will always attract attention. It is normal for people to be excited about this. I don't mind at all. Everyone has their own way of working. Alonso is 44 years old and more active on the court, which is normal. My dad is 65 years old and is no longer so active, but he has a strong coaching team to support him. Everyone has their own way of training, and there is no only right way. It is completely normal for everyone to pay attention to Alonso's daily work now, because he just took over the team. In clubs like Real Madrid, everyone wants to know how he works.
Q: Why do you think you didn't win the league, cup or UEFA Champions League last season?
A: Last season was very complicated, and the injury problem brought unexpected difficulties to us. Kavajal's injury has had a big impact on us. His competitiveness in daily training is very important. Militon's injury also made our defense even weaker. As my dad said during the season, we didn’t maintain enough stability to compete with Barcelona, which performed well.
Q: Does Cross's departure have a great impact?
Answer: Absolutely. Cross's departure is as powerful as Sergio Ramos, Ronaldo or Casemiro's departure. Cross is an irreplaceable player in Real Madrid and football history. He is a very difficult player to find. Players like him and Modric have conveyed many indescribable messages through their role model. Cross's departure was a huge loss, but everyone already knew he would leave, and we welcomed the most talented player in the world. I have no resentment towards last season, really. It was an incredible experience for me.
Q: What name would you give this experience?
A: I don't know, but this is an unexpected gift. This experience is very wonderful...
Q: What was your most memorable moment? Is it that Manchester City game?
A: If I want to choose a moment, I will choose the third goal against Paris Saint-Germain, the one from Benzema.
Q: What about the worst moment?
A: The worst moment may be the 0-4 game we lost to Barcelona at the Bernabeu, which was Xavi's first season.
Q: It was the game that put Modric almost in the forward position that day...
A: yes, despite the excellent performance that season, the team gave me a very bad feeling that day.
Q: Your resume at Real Madrid is so brilliant, do you think you should have worked in the club all the time?
Answer: I don’t know. I think over time, I will cherish what I have achieved more. Real Madrid's high standards make this all look ordinary.
Q: Do you have any dream of coaching Real Madrid?
Answer: This dream exists. Who doesn't want to coach Real Madrid? If you ask everyone who has coached or played for Real Madrid, they will have this dream. Xavi Alonso's dream may be to return to Real Madrid to coach. So, yes, it must be a dream.
Q: Do you think your identity (An Shuai’s son) will be helpful in realizing this dream?
A: It may be helpful, but I still need to work hard on my own. It's not enough to rely solely on it. It is important to have dreams, but you also have goals. Now my goal is to do a good job with the Brazilian national team and win the World Cup.
