In the quarter-finals of the Club World Cup, Dortmund lost to Real Madrid 2-3 and missed the semi-finals. In an interview after the game, Dortmund coach Kovac said that the team was too passive in the first half.

Kovac said this: "I laughed at the end of the game because I saw Courtois' world-class save. If we tied the score to 3-3, it might not be fair."
"We were too passive and too bad in the first half. We performed better in the second half and made some tactical adjustments."
